The end of May, I had a surgical biopsy done on my upper right arm, which showed an indefinite pathology. The end result of the biopsy was a referral to Dr. Richard Nicholas at UAMS (Med Center) in Little Rock who performed surgery on July 27 and hence determined the mass was a high grade sarcoma which had metastasized to my lung with 5 lesions. Chemotherapy (4 weeks in hospital separated by 2 weeks at home) and radiation (35 sessions) followed. These procedures all took place in L.R. at UAMS. Chemo was complete November 24, radiation a bit sooner.

The good news from my check up and X ray on Jan. 4 is that my lungs are clear. An earlier MRI noted the arm is clear. God is good, prayers have worked and the nasty meds are working. My docs and nurses have been super….great care. So this has been an interesting summer/fall. Aquatic therapy and now some land OT are proving useful for rehab and general conditioning. I am getting stronger each day and plan to be in Washington the end of February for the ATRI Specialty and Sanibel for the Symposium. My Breast Cancer workshop has expanded a bit.

So what does this mean to you? I think it means that you never know quite what is coming and you better stay strong and fit. I think it meant some good thinking and meditation time for me to get priorities in order. I have appreciated family and friends and their support more than you know.

When I go to the pool at Conway Regional every day for my own rehab I meet folks who need to talk. Now, I have time to listen. Nobody complains that I have no hair . Most everyone needs encouragement and this is a reciprocal arrangement.

I plan to do some writing about exercise for oncology patients both in hospital and at home. If you have ideas or suggestions I will welcome them. Quality of life is a major issue and we all have different perceptions and measurements. My soapbox is still : take responsibility for yourself and get moving….

My favorite quote from the year is from L. Jablonsky…..”Show up, pay attention and reach out to others. “

Thank you for being…..Peace, Mary
